Recap of Missouri Autism Summit 2012

   On February 23, a motivated group of parents, providers, and policy makers came together in Jefferson City for the fourth annual Missouri Autism Summit.
This event is unique in that it is more of a participant-led event, NOT in the traditional workshop or a conference format.  It included open floor discussions with guided topics, which ranged from the revision of the DSM to special education legislation to change Missouri's due process system.

Representatives from the Office of Autism and the Missouri Department of Mental Health were on hand to give briefings on federal health care, state budget outlook, and the implementation of the new autism insurance law. Attendees also provided general updates from the state-wide autism community, from their organizations, and their local regions.  In the afternoon, attendees helped in making an autism awareness video, brainstormed for the annual autism rally, and some participated in a workshop for IPAD aps for autism.
   
    Overall, the most touted benefit from attendees was the ability to network with others in the autism community.  This is precisely why the Missouri Autism Summit was created - to give an opportunity for motivated advocates to convene and collaborate.  The beginning of any great advancement starts with sharing an idea and following up with determination - thanks to all those who made the day successful!
